When did you last put your car in your garage? For many British homeowners, the answer is never. The garage is more likely to be home to a washing machine or freezer, a storage space for bikes and DIY equipment, or simply a dumping ground for assorted clutter. Often this isn’t by choice: the standard UK garage door is still the same 7ft wide that it was 50 years ago, while family cars have bulked up significantly. The result, according to a survey by the Door & Hardware Federation, is that 75% of garages in new-build homes simply won’t fit most modern cars inside.
